Theory & Practical Tests explained

Theory Test

A Theory Test can be arranged at any UK centre and once the test is passed the certificate is valid for 2 years. It is permissable to drive before you have passed the Theory Test but until you have passed you have no entitlement to a Practical Test and will therefore be unable to book one.

If you require further advice please talk to us on 0800 345 7816 and we will be pleased to help.

From 3 September 2007, the number of multiple choice questions in the theory test for car and motorcycle candidates was increased from 35 to 50.

This increase is designed to develop higher driving standards and maximise the test’s potential for road safety and other benefits. The maximum time allowed to complete the multiple choice questions part of the test is 57 minutes and candidates will need to achieve a pass mark of at least 43 correct responses out of 50.

The updated version of the theory test book and CD Rom are now available to purchase from retailers or by clicking on the official Bookstore button on the DSA website www.dsa.gov.uk

All car and motorcycle candidates calling or going online to book theory tests which will fall either on or after 3 September were made aware of the increased length and cost of the test.

The Theory Test fee is £30.00.

How to Book Your DSA Theory Test

Practical Test

When attending for your practical test you must produce certain documents and have an appropriately insured and licensed vehicle suitable for the test. Make sure you have these documents available when the examiner calls your name.

You must bring the following items with you. If you do not, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) may refuse to carry out the test and you may lose your fee.

  • an appropriately insured and licensed vehicle, displaying L- Plates (except for taxi and Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) part 2 tests), that is suitable for the purpose of the test
  • the appropriate theory test pass certificate (or confirmation) if you are not exempt
  •  your appointment letter
  • both parts of your photo card licence. If you do not take both parts of your licence your test will not take place and you will lose your fee
  • if you have an old-style paper licence, you must take your signed driver licence and a valid passport - from 1 November 2005 no other form of photographic identification will be accepted

If you misplace your licence, you must apply for a replacement from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), which could take up to 15 days. If this happens, you may have to rearrange your test.

How to Book Your DSA Practical Test

Test appointments are controlled by the Driving Standards Agency and the time it takes to pass the Theory and Practical tests depends on the current waiting lists. If your preferred test time is unavailable we will keep trying on your behalf until we get a suitable appointment. You should allow as much time as possible when booking your test or intensive course, however, we can arrange courses at very short notice. Please contact us to discuss availability.
